The Pandemic of HIV Infection

Lessons from Africa

Ahmed S. Latif

University of Zimbabwe Medical School, Harare, Zimbabwe

The HIV/AIDS epidemic has affected every country in the world. The majority of persons living with HIV infection and AIDS are found in the developing world where resources are poor, and access to care and new treatments is limited. Despite the high prevalence rates, care for persons with HIV infection living in these countries is not given priority as a result of the high burden of dis ease due to other illnesses. In areas where the epidemic is most severe, the provision of care is further compromised by the rapidly weakening economies and the costs of effective medications. Sub- Saharan Africa has been badly hit by the pandemic and various lessons can be learnt from local experiences by the in international community, especially people living in South-East Asia.
